Hannah here, coming to you from hot and sweaty Florida, where this weekend I got to hang out with one of our team members, Tara! π πWe got to talk about business, life, and the world in person; it was great! One topic that came up, as it often does, was niching... Now, can I tell you a secret that might take the pressure off of the big, bad, scary beast that niching is often made out to be? π I never sat down one day, opened a notebook, and decided on my niche. It found me. And it happened in the most unglamorous way possible. The client who changed everythingEarly on in my VA business, I took on a client who happened to be an alternative doctor. Naturopathy, holistic health, women's health: preventative rather than corrective healthcare. I didn't seek her out specifically. She needed support, I had the skills, and I came with a good referral, so we got to work. Then something unexpected followed. I loved it. The work, the conversations, the world she was operating in, it lit me up. I was curious about everything she did. I learned so many new things. I went above and beyond not because I had to, but because I actually cared about what we were building. And she noticed. π She referred me to a friend. Who referred me to another friend. Before long, I had a roster of alternative health practitioners and women doctors, and a niche I never planned for, but that fit me like a glove. That's when things really took off! What this taught me about nichingHere's the thing about niching that most people get wrong - they think it's a decision you make before you start. Like you sit down, do a pros-and-cons list, pick an industry, and commit. But for a lot of us, it's the other way around. Your niche reveals itself through the work. You choose something to start with, but it's the client who makes you lose track of time, the referral that arrives because you showed up so fully that someone couldn't not tell their network about you, that's sometimes what has you finding gold! Sometimes, your ideal niche, the one that is most profitable and has the least resistance, is discovered. The many paths to finding yoursThere's no single right way. Here are a few I've seen work beautifully: π¬ The discovery path: like mine. You focus on the value you provide above all else. You take on a client, you love it, you lean in, and word spreads naturally within that community. π The values path: you don't niche by industry at all, but by the people you want to work with. "I work with entrepreneurs who care about the environment." "I support queer-owned businesses." "I work with founders who put people over profits." That clarity is just as powerful, often more so. π οΈ The skills path: you look at what you're truly great at and follow where that skill is most needed. A love of systems and automation might lead you to online course creators. An eye for design might pull you toward brand builders. π± The organic path: you start as a generalist, observe which work energizes you (and which drains you), and slowly narrow from there. Nothing is wasted, and everything is informative on your path.
Some questions for you...If you're in the early stages and feeling the pressure to pick the perfect niche right now, first of all, breathe. π§ββοΈ Ask yourself instead: What kind of work makes me forget to check the clock? Which clients have I left a call with feeling energized rather than depleted? What world do I secretly want to learn more about?
What can I simply get started with right now to begin understanding these things?
Your niche might already be whispering, but overthinking may be drowning it out and keeping you from a natural next step. If you want a proper deep dive, the why, the how, the exact strategies that help you find and own your niche and become MAGNETIC in the process, I have a whole training class, workbook, and more coming up on this. (I don't do topic-specific LIVE masterclasses like this often, but when I do, I ALWAYS overdeliver.) βπ You can register right here!β Looking forward to seeing you there and diving deep! ππͺ Hannah PS: Find your very own pathway to niching and see your business grow! Hi there! Hannah here π For many years, I could not place why I never fit into traditional workplaces. I had my guesses, yet not once was the reason that Iβm lazy, disorganized, or rebellious. So what was it? First, I want to share that Iβm not alone in this, and neither are you. Research backs it up. Across thousands of studies, the same patterns keep appearing: people struggle in traditional workplaces for surprisingly consistent reasons: Neurodivergence (ADHD, autism, dyslexia): an...
Hey hey! Hannah here :) I am harping on about Threads so much lately, but for very good reason. Iβve been watching our community experiment with it over the past few months, and something really interesting is happening. The people who are trying the least to go viral are often the ones landing clients (and often going pretty viral too haha). Hereβs what I mean. Mistake #1: Treating Threads like Instagram You donβt need a polished graphic. You donβt need a carousel. You donβt even need a...
Hi Reader, Hannah here :) A quick story on how I got my first good client... now, when I say good, I mean they didn't bat an eyelid at my pricing; they paid on time every time, trusted me, respected me, and, in turn, I did great work with them. π I found her in a Facebook group. She had posted asking for help with a task I happened to know inside out; I replied thoughtfully. She clicked my name, poked around, saw that my messaging was consistent, saw that I worked with people just like her,...
